"All of us are called to offer others an explicit witness to the saving love of the Lord, who despite our imperfections offers us his closeness, his word and his strength, and gives meaning to our lives. In your heart you know that it is not the same to live without him; what you have come to realize, what has helped you to live and given you hope, is what you also need to communicate to others.
Our falling short of perfection should be no excuse; on the contrary, mission is a constant stimulus not to remain mired in mediocrity but to continue growing. The witness of faith that each Christian is called to offer leads us to say with Saint Paul: “Not that I have already obtained this, or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own” (Phil 3:12-13).
- Pope Francis, Joy of the Gospel 121
Jesus gradually invites us deeper into relationship: 1) Come and see... 2) come unto me... 3) come follow me... But, obedience is the heart of discipleship as we learn to cooperate with grace for the life of the world. Jesus commands his disciples: "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.... This I command you, love one another." (John 15:16-17).
By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. (John 15:8)
Our participation in the parish, and our communion at Mass, should serve to nourish and strengthen us for the personal missions we live out in the wider community in our daily lives.
Pope Benedict XVI said, "Being in communion with Jesus Christ draws us into His “being for all”; it makes it our own way of being. He commits us to live for others, but only through communion with Him does it become possible truly to be there for others, for the whole.”
We are Jesus' body now on earth. Ours are his heart, hands, feet and words.. We must share our faith in words & deeds, living as beacons of Christ's love and mercy.
"Ask Jesus what he wants from you, and be brave." - Pope Francis
