“Each person receives a different degree of sanctifying grace through Holy Communion, for each one receives according to one’s disposition of desire and thirst for union with Christ in the sacrament.” - The Eucharist, p. 503
"O almighty, everlasting God, behold, I draw near to the Sacrament of your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I draw near, as a sick man to the Physician of life, as one defiled to the Fountain of mercy, as one blind to the Light of Eternal Splendor, as one poor and needy to the Lord of Heaven and Earth.... Grant me, I beseech you, to receive not only the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of my Lord, but also the very Reality and Strength of the Sacrament."
-- excerpt from St. Thomas Aquinas' Prayer Before Communion
- Fast from food & drink (except water & medicine) for an hour before communion --
then ask yourself, are you as hungry spiritually for the real presence of Jesus as you are physically for food? If you are in need of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, please do so as an act of preparation.
- Pray an act of faith: a simple, heartfelt prayer to God that you believe He wants to share His divine life with you, asking for the grace to receive Him with an open heart.
- Reflect on the scriptue readings beforehand and ask God what He's saying to you.
- If Mass seems boring, seek to understand what's happening so you can participate fully, actively & consciously through the whole Mass! Check out our parish library or formed.org.
