Alternate Saint of the Month Text
Alternate Saint of the Month Text – St. Paul Miki's life is the story of a martyr, so I would probably NOT read it straight from the book because some of it is a bit violent! For 3rd grade and up, use the summary I put below. For those who have kindergarteners or 1st geaders, you can just say St. Paul Miki was a Christian in Japan who was forgiving and loving in a time when people didn’t like Christians.
St. Paul Miki was born in the 1500s. His dad was a Japanese military leader. When Paul was 5, his family became Christians and he got to learn the faith from Jesuit missionaries!Japan began persecuting Christians. Christians were told to give up their faith or die. St. Paul Miki was among 26 Japanese Christians who chose their faith. They were crucified like Jesus. And also like Jesus, St. Paul Miki forgave his persecutors. The 26 Christians sang hymns on the cross until hey passed away. The persecution of Christians pretty much eradicated the faith from Japan for centuries, but when Japan began to open back up, historians found relics in Nagasaki of the Christians who had lived during St. Paul Miki’s time.
